WINTER TIME

Here we want to show what each school does during winter and Christmas time.

December national customs in Hungary

4th the day of Borbala (Barbara).
It is not good to draw off wine before this day. A branch is put into water so as to blossom for New Year’s Day. ( cherry, peach, apricot, almond)

6th The day of Mikulás or St. Nicholas.
He arrives wearing the robes of a bishop, with a stoff in one hand and a sack full of small presents in the other. Accompanying him there is a „Devil”, a boy in a black costume, complete with horns and a long toil. He holds some dry twings (virgács), ready to smack any „naughty” children. Each child receives a small gifts, usually a toy or sweets from Mikulás. (St Nicholas is the medieval patron saint of students)

13th The day of Luca (the patron saint of handicraftsmen)
There are several pagan traditions in connection with this day.
a.) „It is being made like Luca’s chair”
According to the superstitions belief he who stands on this chair – on the midnight mass- can see the witches but immediately after that the chair must be burnt.
b.) The weather of the 12 days between the Luca-day and Xmas determines the weather of the naxt 12 months.
c.) The so called „onion calender”
Some salt is spread on the 12 leaves of an onion and the leaf which gets wet that month will be rainy.

24th
The main Christmas celebrations take place on Xmas Eve.The evening is called Szent- este or Holy Evening.
Presents are put under decorated Xmas tree and when it is dark the members of the family gather around the tree, they sing carols or just listen to them from a CD, they open the presents, kiss each other and have their Xmas dinner.
We usually eat fish with salads, fishsoup (halászlé), gingerbread, a special cake full of nut and poppy seed (beigli). Many people attend Mignight Mass.

25th- 26th
The relatives come together. They talk, have a walk in the park, go sledging, watch TV, have a rest.
The presenting of notivity plays is an important part of the Hungarian Xmas tradition.Performed by groups of children or adults, these plays are often combined with puppets and are accompanied by songs and musical instruments and sometimes even dancing.
27th the vineyard- owners consecrate wine- They pour some drops of this wine to every barrel so that the wine wouldn’t spoil.

New Years ’s Eve – Sylvester
People have parties, go dancing and at midnight they welcome the New Year and wish happy New Year to each other and they kiss each other as well.
