On Christmas
eve at midnight people go to Mass and baby Jesus is laid in the crib.
On Christmas morning children open the presents that Father Christmas
brought to them.
Christmas tree is all decorated with
glass baubles, lights, silver and golden threads.
Mum prepares dinner very brightly, she puts a beautiful tablecloth
and some candles in the middle.
We eat “tortellini”, “zampone” ( stuffed
pig’s trotter), puree and lentils.
At the end we have panettone ( a cake made with candied fruit) or
pandoro and sparkling wine;
We drink a toast and we share Merry Christmas wishes.
In the afternoon we usually play bingo
with all the family.

| Filastrocca
di capodanno:
fammi gli auguri per tutto l’anno:
voglio un gennaio col sole d’aprile,
un luglio fresco, un marzo gentile;
voglio un giorno senza sera,
voglio un mare senza bufera;
voglio un pane sempre fresco,
sul cipresso il fiore del pesco;
che siano amici il gatto e il cane,
che diano latte le fontane.
Se voglio troppo, non darmi niente,
dammi una faccia allegra solamente. |
New
year eve rhyme:
send me greetings for all year long:
I want January with April sun,
A fresh July, a gentle March;
I want a day without the evening,
I want a sea without storm;
I want an always fresh bread,
On the cypress peach flowers;
Cats and dogs become friends,
I want milk from fountains.
If I am asking too much, don’t give me anything,
Give me only a smiling face. |

In Italy we celebrate new year eve lighting
the sky with fireworks to welcome the new year.
Many
people, especially in the south of Italy, throw old things out of
the windows, as throwing away the negative part of the year.
At
midnight we exchange greetings drinking sparking wine and wearing
funny hats.
People in love use to kiss under a small branch of mistletoe for
good luck.
Capodanno
dinner is very rich, traditional dishes varies from region to region,
but “zampone”(pig’s trotter stuffed with meat)
and “lenticchie”( lentils) are eaten everywhere in Italy.
Lentils will bring you good luck and money, that’s why the
more you eat them, the best it is!.
The
origins of new Year eve go back to the ancient roman calendar, when
January and February didn’t exist, so Capodanno in our region
was on March 1st. This was used only in the Venetian Republic till
1797. |

| La
Befana
Senti? Suona mezzanotte.
Dormi! Viene la Befana
Con le scarpe tutte rotte
dalla casa sua lontana…
Entra: il dito sulla bocca,
con quel sacco che le pesa…
Tutto vede e nulla tocca
vuol silenzio come in chiesa.
Vuota il sacco mano mano,
posa tante cose belle…
Torna a casa piano piano,
alla casa tra le stelle.

The
Befana
Can you hear? It’s midnight
Sleep! The Befana is coming
with all broken shoes
from her far away home…
She comes in: the finger on her mouth,
With that heavy sack…
Everything she sees and nothing she touches,
she wants silence as in a church.
she empties the sack a little at time,
she leaves many nice things…
she goes back slowly slowly,
to her house among the stars.

Befana
is an old woman; she flies on a broomstick over roofs.She brings
presents to children in the night between January 5th -6th, to remember
the Three Kings who brought presents to Jesus.
If
children weren’t good during the year, she only brings them
ash and coal; but if they were good she puts small presents into
socks that are generally hanged on the fireplace or at the bottom
of the bed. |
